Tow Truck Operator’s Licence
When using a towing service make sure to use a licensed towing provider like Rockdale Towing.
At Rockdale Towing we are licensed and fully insured. Below is some information about our Operator’s Licence.
The purpose of this licence is to allow members of the community to easily identify that the tow truck assisting them is part of an approved business and that the person operating the tow truck conducts themselves appropriately.
You will need this licence to operate a business involving the operation of tow trucks for the purpose of towing motor vehicles.
There are two different towing categories:
- accident towing
- trade and breakdown towing.
An accident towing licence allows you to undertake all forms of towing. A trade and breakdown licence only allows you to undertake trade and breakdown towing (i.e. you cannot attend accident scenes to tow motor vehicles).
You must not carry out accident towing work unless you have obtained a towing authorisation for that towing work. A towing authorisation authorises the towing only of the motor vehicle specified in the authorisation. Authorisation is not required where the driver is doing accident towing work according to the direction of a police officer or authorised officer to move a motor vehicle that is causing an obstruction to traffic.
Please note that if you intend on undertaking accident towing work you will require authorisation from a police officer, the owner of the car, or an authorised officer before you can remove a motor vehicle from the scene of an accident, or where the motor vehicle has moved immediately after the accident.
